I am Mrs Mazibuko from Brooklyn Heights Primary School and I am the HOD for foundation phase.
- What’s the most inspiring experience that you had as a teacher?
Due to one learner’s background, he had no idea of the English language. I persevered and ensured he improved his literacy level. At the end of the year, not only was he able to read and write fluently in English, but he was able to take the subject award.
- What is your secret superpower?
Love and respect to each child irrespective of their social economic background or their academic performance.
- What’s the funniest thing that is ever happened to you in a classroom?
One learner brought a cat to class she found outside the school gate. She explained that sometimes this cat will abandon her children and that she would take care of it.
- What do you love the most about being a teacher?
The fact that I can mould young minds to become what they want to become but also to be future leaders and responsible citizens of our country.
- What did you want to be when you were little?
Being brought up by my sister who was a nurse, I always envisaged nursing as my career however teaching was always my calling.
- Who is was your favourite female teacher when you were at school and why?
To date I still remember my favourite teacher Mrs Masina, who instilled the love of knitting hence to date knitting has been my spare time hobby.
- During this pandemic, what advice would you give to your learners and other educators?
To always remember the golden rule “I protect you and you protect me” by wearing masks, maintaining social distancing of 2 meters, most importantly to frequently wash your hands with soap and also add Vicks or eucalyptus oil to hot water and breath in the steam. #stay home and be safe.
