Lizelle De Bruin – Head of CAT and IT Department at Alberton High School

  1. What is your current role within the education space?
I am the head of CAT and IT Department at Alberton High School. I have been teaching Grade 12 Economics for 13 years. I am involved in fundraising events and leadership programmes in the school.
  1. What inspired you to follow this career path?
My passion for economics led to using an educational platform to inspire and encourage students to view the world through an economic lens, motivating and ensuring that they achieve their goals and aspirations in the near future. I encourage my students to apply the knowledge in practical ways.
  1. What do you love most about what you do?
I love that I get to learn, as a teacher, on a daily basis because I am exposed to the various cultures, traditions and religions of my students. I love my students’ humorous approach to political occurrences in the country. I am proud to be a part of the growth of my students as they evolve into young economists who embark on the world with all its challenges.
  1. What attributes, do you feel, are important for success in your role?
Passion, determination, leadership, patience, self-discipline and creativity are essential attributes inside and outside the school environment that I have used for the past 15 years of my teaching career.
  1. What obstacles in life have you had to overcome, and what did you learn?
Conflict within my personal relationships has taught me to be more expressive and vulnerable in social settings allowing for more open communication.
  1. What advice do you have for young girls?
Push yourself beyond your known capacity and strive to achieve all your aspirations in life.
